American Spy (Wiley, 2007)

american-spy-cover2American Spy is the fascinating history of Watergate burglar E. Howard Hunt, his time in the OSS (the forerunner to the CIA during WWII), his twenty- plus years of escapades as a CIA agent, his involvement in Watergate and other affairs, and the backbreaking years afterwards.

Amongst many other historical events, Hunt was involved in the successful coup that deposed Guatemala president Jacobo Arbenz in 1954, which, in turn, set the stage for disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, which he helped mastermind.   Both of these epic, Shakespearian tragedies, fueled by Cold War hostilities, had long-term effects on U.S. international policy and geo-politics.   Readers will also find an amazing amount of information about secret operations, such as the CIA’s production of the movie Animal Farm, as a form of anti-Soviet propaganda, the publication of many books in the U.S and abroad, and the placement of reporters and news articles in the most prominent news organizations in the world such as Time and CBS, along with many other items of interest.   Did you know, for instance, that Fodor’s Travel Guides were originally published by the CIA in an attempt to get foreigners to visit the United States so that they would grow to like us more?
